Whitworth women fall to UPS

The Spokesman-Review

It turns out that the third time wasn’t the charm for the Whitworth University women’s soccer team.

Adrienne Folsom redirected a Janece Levien shot past Pirates goalkeeper Krista Dietz at the 29-minute mark for the game-winning goal in Puget Sound’s 2-1 victory over Whitworth in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs Sunday at Tacoma.

Whitworth had lost both previous meetings with UPS this season (1-0 at Tacoma on Sept. 30 and 3-2 at home on Oct. 27).

Penelope Crowe put Whitworth (18-3) on the board first when she took a pass from Jael Hagerott in the 4th minute and fired the ball past Puget Sound goalkeeper Kallie Wolfer from 25 yards out for a 1-0 Pirates lead.

Puget Sound (20-1-1) answered at 13 minutes when Katie Gillette headed in Levien’s crossing pass in front of the net.

After Folsom put Puget Sound up 2-1, the teams combined for 18 shots in the second half but neither team scored.

•Danesha Adams scored twice in the first 11 minutes to pace the UCLA Bruins (16-1-2, 9-0) to a 3-0 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Washington Huskies (5-13-1, 2-6-1) at Seattle.

Men’s soccer

Tannen Wels scored the lone goal, in the 55th minute, to give the San Diego Toreros (9-8-1, 6-3-1) a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs at San Diego. It was the second consecutive 1-0 loss for the Bulldogs (9-5-4, 4-3-4).

•Ely Allen scored twice and assisted on another goal to give the Washington Huskies (8-7-2, 3-4-1) a 4-2 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Stanford Cardinal (6-6-5, 3-4-2) at Seattle.

Women’s basketball

Katy Baker scored 18 points and Kyla Evans chipped in with 17 as the Eastern Washington Eagles opened their season with a 63-48 non-conference victory over the Montana Tech Orediggers at Cheney.

Nicole Scott added 10 points and eight rebounds for EWU as the Eagles shot 39.6 percent (21 of 53) from the floor.

Adrea Thomas paced Montana Tech (3-4) with 11 points.

•Laiken Dollente scored 16 points and handed out four assists to lead the Portland Pilots to an 83-55 non-conference victory over the Idaho Vandals at Moscow, Idaho.

Laura Thomas added 15 points and Meagan Bermingham 10 for Portland (2-0).

Therese Riedel had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Idaho (0-2).

Rowing

The Gonzaga University men’s varsity eight boat finished fourth at the fall season-ending Head of the Lake Regatta at the Lake Washington Ship Canal rowing course in Seattle, just under seven seconds behind race winner University of Victoria.

In the women’s race, Washington State had the victorious boat, covering the wind-shortened course in 7 minutes, 2.72 seconds, outdistancing Victoria and third-place Gonzaga.
