Officials should be fined, too

The Spokesman-Review

I shake my head when I read about coaches at the college or professional level being fined for their remarks about the officiating at their game.

I have played and coached sports for more than 50 years. This includes many levels from youth to adults, including the college level. Most of that involved baseball/softball and basketball.

I am sorry to say the biggest memory I have today is the poor job officials did. I don’t have a problem with them making a bad call, but I do have a problem when they are “called” for it and the coach gets fined for their comments. This may come as a surprise, but these people are human and will make mistakes. Don’t penalize a coach for pointing that out. If you are going to fine a coach for his/her comments on the job officials do, fine the officials, too.
