Hits keep on coming

This moment ranks as No. 5: Chris Jackson runs over Tony Parrish and goes in for a touchdown against the Huskies in the 1997 Apple Cup, a 41-35 Cougar win in Seattle.

This is the 100th Apple Cup, and if the first 99 have revealed anything it’s that Washington vs. Washington State does not always make for great football – or, as this year, even much in the way of anticipation.

Nor does every game have its big moment. But most have several.

So we picked 100 of those to commemorate the big birthday and get the arguments started.

Because one man’s defining moment is another’s myth. And because it’s not always about achievement. Sometimes it’s about wrenching disappointment, low comedy, curious officiating or dubious sportsmanship. Sometimes a spectacular play doesn’t impact the game. Sometimes the biggest games pivot on the smallest of points.

The most significant Apple Cup of all, for instance, turned on unlikely failure – and when you turn the page, that’ll be your starting point.

No doubt you’ll notice some prominent absentees. No Rueben Mayes? No Reggie Williams? No Jack Thompson? No Joe Steele?

Surely all of them were major players in this ongoing drama. But then, this isn’t a list of memorable names.

It’s a list of memorable moments. And, of course, they have a list of their own.
