Locally: Spokane swimmer Dole in national meet
Jenni Dole, a senior at Mead and member of the Spokane Area Swimming team, will compete in the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals beginning Thursday in Atlanta.
Dole, who earned a high-point award to help lead SAS to first place in the Turkey Trot meet last weekend at Eastern Washington University, will compete in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 and 200 backstroke in Atlanta. Several U.S. Olympic swimmers are also expected to compete in the meet.
She is one of three members of SAS to sign letters of intent with Division I schools, SAS coach Todd Marsh announced.
Dole signed with Oregon State; Lauren Malthaner, a senior at Northwest Christian, signed with Fresno State; and Brittney Moore, a senior at Mead, signed with New Mexico State.
College scene
Gonzaga senior forward George Josten has been named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America men’s soccer first team for the second straight year.
Josten, who has a 3.83 grade-point average in civil engineering, was also a third-team selection in 2005.
“Chelsi Shaw, a Puget Sound junior from Metaline Falls via Wenatchee Valley College, was an all-tournament selection at the Allstate Cantillana Tip-Off Classic women’s basketball tournament last weekend in Tacoma.
She scored 11 points, eight in the second half, in a 64-50 win over Corban College that capped a 2-0 weekend for the 19th-ranked Loggers.
“Weston Wood from Riverside is back for his senior season with the Puget Sound men’s basketball team, which is ranked 19th among NCAA Division III schools and opened the season 3-0.
“Buddy Wood, a Central Washington sophomore linebacker from Riverside, was named to the All-North Central Conference first team in football.
Central junior defensive lineman Mitch Reffett from Moses Lake and Corbin Anderson, Western Washington’s senior punter from University, earned honorable mention.
“Central Washington junior Rachael Schurman from Mead was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II All-Pacific Region first team.
The 6-foot middle blocker led the Wildcats in nearly every offensive statistical category, averaging 4.03 kills, 1.29 blocks, 4.98 points per game, and hit .342, second in the GNAC.
“Brittney Kubik, a senior middle blocker from Lind-Ritzville for region champion Lewis-Clark State, was named to the 12-member NAIA All-Region I volleyball first team.
Jen Greeny, the former Davenport and Washington State star and Pullman High coach and LCSC’s first-year coach, was named the region’s Coach of the Year.
“The NWAACC Eastern Region volleyball all-star teams are dominated by area athletes.
The first team includes two sophomores from Community Colleges of Spokane, setter Miranda Gouin (Ferris) and right-side hitter Brandy Sonderland.
Also on the six-member first team are two sophomore middle blockers from Columbia Basin, Miranda Weitz (Pullman) and Clarissa Harston (Rosalia), and two from Walla Walla, sophomore libero Danielle Porter (Lewis and Clark) and freshman outside hitter Amanda Grumbach (Curlew).
On the second team are CCS freshman middle blocker Lisa Steinbach (Post Falls) and Walla Walla freshman middle blocker Jenna Kragt (Lind-Ritzville).
“Tom McAndrews and Carrie Conners are the Eastern Washington athletics department’s scholar-athletes for the month for October.
McAndrews, a senior tight end in football from Mead, has a 4.0 GPA with a double major in finance and economics. Conners, a senior defender, has a 3.63 GPA in biology.
Swimming
Washington State has signed four women to letters of intent, coach Erica Quam announced.
Slated to join the Cougars next fall are Emma Neely from Sunbury, Australia, a top-10 ranked swimmer in her country in the backstroke and freestyle; and Danielle Palumbo from Skyline of Sammamish, Wash., who specializes in the backstroke and individual medley, twice a Washington state championships finalist.
Also, Jessie Craig, a breaststroke specialist from Etobicoke, Ontario, who will compete in the Canadian Olympic Trials; and Melissa Bogert from Juneau, Alaska, a five-time All-American who specializes in the butterfly and freestyle.
Volleyball
Outgoing president Pete Bell was named Contributor of the Year by the Spokane Area Volleyball Referees Association at its award banquet last Sunday.
Other award winners were Heide Wehr, Rookie of the Year; William Hyatt, Second-Year Official of the Year; and Ben Goodwin and Sam Chay, Third-Year Officials of the Year. Chay and Amy Reed shared Most Improved.
Dale Goodwin was named Referee of the Year, Most Inspirational and shared Partner of the Year with Barb Farnsworth.
Incoming officers are Bob Francis, president; Kammi Mencke, vice president; Jodi Murphy, secretary; Bell, past president; and Patty Kells, David Williams, Corey Brantley and Linda Kildew, members at large.
