Second chances deserved

The Spokesman-Review

In response to Edward Hawthorne’s letter Nov. 18 (“Zags set bad example”), I would first like to thank you, Mr. Hawthorne, for your decision to no longer support Gonzaga basketball.

I think I can speak for most fans when I say we do not want someone as arrogant, narrow-minded and condescending as yourself supporting our beloved team anyway.

I can only assume you were referring to the reinstatement of Josh Heytvelt and Theo Davis to the basketball team.

Apparently, Hawthorne, you have never made a mistake in your life. That is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations. However, most of us believe in second chances, and to my knowledge both men went above and beyond what was required by both the judge and the school to get them back in good standing.

It is unfortunate your blinders have prevented you from knowing the success stories of so many former and current Gonzaga basketball players. Delighting in the long term success of others can be much more satisfying than criticizing them for a moment of weakness. You should try this sometime. We would even welcome you back as a true Zags fan because, well, we believe in second chances.
