Hulett back as Indians boss

Tim Hulett will return to manage the Spokane Indians, the club announced Tuesday.

Hitting coach Hector Ortiz will also be back and the club will add pitching coach Mike Anderson.

Hulett, a former major league player with the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals, managed the Indians to a 33-42 overall record last season.

Anderson was the pitching coach for the Texas Rangers’ Class A affiliate in Bakersfield, Calif.

The Indians open the season on June 17 at Avista Stadium against the Everett AquaSox.

Just another bus ride for Tigers

Lewis and Clark’s itinerary to play in the Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Gridiron Classic championship includes a Saturday bus ride.

“The kids are used to getting off the bus and playing,” said coach Tom Yearout of the rationale.

While teams typically arrive a day early, Yearout said the Tigers will load their gear in plastic garbage bags, depart by charter at 9 a.m. and return following the game. The bus stops every two hours for players to stretch. They’ll eat, shower and go play.

Former assistant Pat Pfeifer noted that when LC played Snohomish in the semifinals in 1978, the Tigers flew to and from the Saturday game, filling a charter flight that was taking the other passengers to Hawaii and back.

LC’s State 4A championship game against Bothell in the Tacoma Dome will be broadcast live at 7:30 p.m. on FSN.
