Looking ahead
The cross-district brothers meet for a 10th time in football Friday when Timberlake (4-1 overall) visits Lakeland (3-3) at Corbit Field in Rathdrum.
The teams have played some entertaining games lately, but whether this one lives up to billing is questionable. Timberlake senior quarterback Levi Powers bruised a leg last week and didn’t play the final three quarters against Priest River.
“We have two league games left after we play Lakeland. We need our quarterback to be healthy,” Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said.
It’s a big game to Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer, who watched his team score a late touchdown against the Tigers only to see Timberlake rally last year. In Rathdrum, they don’t like it when big brother loses to little brother. So the Hawks, believe it or not, have had this game circled on their schedule.
“We’re going to prepare for Levi being in there,” Kiefer said. “If things go our way and we happen to win, I don’t want people to think it was because Levi was out. We want to play them full strength.”
Albertson appreciates the significance of the game.
“It’s always a big game because it’s a rivalry game,” Albertson said. “There’s probably more emotion in this game for both schools than any game.”
In other games Friday, Central Valley (4-1) visits Lake City (5-0), Sandpoint (3-3) travels to Lewiston (3-2), Bonners Ferry (1-4, 1-0) goes to Priest River (2-3, 1-1), St. Maries (1-5, 0-2) visits Kellogg (2-2, 0-1), Lakeside (0-3, 0-1) is at Mullan (2-3, 0-2) and Wallace (4-1, 1-1) goes to Clark Fork (3-1, 1-0).
In a game Saturday, Ontario (5-0), the second-ranked 4A team from Oregon, is at Post Falls (4-1) at noon.
Coeur d’Alene, Moscow and Kootenai are idle this week.
“CdA needs to fix some problems so it can make a run at a state playoff berth.
“We still have a chance to go to the playoffs, and that’s our goal,” CdA coach Shawn Amos said. “We’re still a good football team. We just hide it really well.”
“After LC handled CdA 39-13 last week, T-Wolves coach Van Troxel determined what it will take for LC to go far into the playoffs.
“We’re going to go as far as our defense takes us,” Troxel said.
