Area roundup: Vandals sweep Broncos
Haley Larsen and Sarah Loney each had double-doubles to lead the Idaho Vandals to a 30-28, 30-25, 30-18 sweep over the Boise State Broncos (4-12, 1-7) in Western Athletic Conference volleyball action on Saturday in Boise.
Larsen finished with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Loney tallied 11 kills and 11 digs for the Vandals (8-9, 4-2).
“Senior Becky Jones totaled 22 kills and 10 digs to spark the Gonzaga University Bulldogs to a 33-31, 33-31, 28-30, 30-24 victory over the visiting Loyola Marymount Lions (9-7, 1-2) in West Coast Conference play.
Heather Dunn finished with 58 assists, 13 digs, six kills and three blocks for the Bulldogs (12-7, 1-3), and Alecia Douglas had a match-high 22 digs.
“Gabby Bulawczyk and Alyssa Wistrick combined for 34 kills to lead the 10th-ranked Southern Idaho Golden Eagles (30-8, 4-1 Scenic West Athletic Conference) to a 24-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-25 win over the North Idaho Cardinals (16-7, 3-2) in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Men’s soccer
Ben Dixon converted a corner kick by Matt Friesen into a game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to lift the Whitworth Pirates (8-2-1, 6-1 Northwest Conference) to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Whitman Missionaries (6-6, 3-4).
The Pirates trailed at halftime for the first time since their season opener, but Friesen scored on a penalty kick to knot the score in the 61st minute.
“Brian Rosco scored two goals and Renatto Brito added a goal and an assist to lead the North Idaho Cardinals to a 6-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference win over the visiting Colorado Eagles.
“Neil Bachman scored a first-half goal and Jay Vela and Jesse Dunbar added second-half goals to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (12-2-1, 11-1 NWAACC) to a 3-0 win over the visiting Everett Trojans (5-7-1, 5-6-1).
Women’s soccer
Penelope Crowe and Lindsey Oakes scored first-half goals and the Whitworth Pirates (10-1, 7-1 Northwest Conference) held on for a 2-1 victory over the visiting Whitworth Missionaries (3-5-2, 2-3-2). Greta Thibodeau had her NWC-leading ninth assist on Oakes’ fifth goal of the season.
“Lindsay Allred scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Shaunee Phillipy got an assist from Patty Duncan to score in the second half as the CC Spokane Sasquatch (8-5-1, 8-3-1) cruised to a 2-0 win over the visiting Everett Trojans (2-8-2, 2-8-2).
Cross country
Nick Gallagher ran his way to a first-place finish to guide the Whitworth Pirates men to a second-place finish at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational in Tacoma.
Gallagher clocked in at 25 minutes, 8.81 seconds over the 8,000-meter course. Whitworth’s Jacob Deitz (25:30.61) finished fifth and Dusty Caseria (25:44.20) was seventh. Western Oregon beat the Whits 30-47 for the team title.
Jo E Mayer (22:47.14) and Sara Wrightman (23:04.44) placed ninth and 10th to lead the Whit women to a third-place finish. Lewis & Clark’s Amanda Phillips (21:27.39) won the 6,000-meter race and Western Oregon was top team.
“Dak Riek (25:14 for 8,000 meters), Mark Moeller (25:16) and Walter Juarez (25:54) placed 1-2-3 to lead the CC Spokane Sasquatch men to an easy win at the NWAACC Preview in Battle Ground, Wash. Stephen Olsen, Tyler Rapp, Max Reeder and Brad Serder placed fifth through eighth for the Sasquatch, who topped runner-up Lane 15-69.
Brittnie Sanchez won the women’s 5,000 in 19:06 and Larsen Agee (19:21) took third to lead CC Spokane to a 22-53 win over Lane for the team title.
