Barbie dolls
Q: I have 82 special-edition designer Barbie dolls, including ones crafted by Bob Mackie and Nicole Miller. I have tried to find a collector to buy my collection, either in bulk or individually, but I have not been successful. I wonder if you can point me in the right direction. — Marie, Cranbury, N.J.
A: One of the better groups is the Windy City Collectors Barbie Doll Club, P.O. Box 417518, Chicago, IL 60641; purpink@aol.com; and 847-357-1675. Julie Birenbaum is the club’s contact person and can advise you. Also, Annette Givens is an appraiser who specializes in Barbie dolls. Her addresses and fax number are 1958 Matador Way, No. 222, Northridge, CA 91330; AnnetteMG@aol.com; and 818-993-0228.

Q: I purchased two antique chairs for $400 from an elderly couple. Taped under the cushions is “Gainsborough.” How much are they worth? — Candace, Pearblossom, Calif.
A: Probably close to what you paid for them. Although you refer to them as antiques, I have carefully examined the photos you sent and think they are more likely from the 20th century.
For a second opinion, you might hire the services of an appraiser in your area. To find one, contact The American Society of Appraisers, P.O. Box 17265, Washington, DC 20071; International Society of Appraisers, 1131 SW 7th Street, Suite 105, Renton, VA 98055; and Appraisers Association of America, 386 Park Ave. S., No. 2000, New York, NY 10016.
