Car stolen, shots fired, one arrested

The Spokesman-Review

A 39-year-old man was jailed Thursday for allegedly stealing a car with two dogs inside, and another man could face charges for shooting at the vehicle and injuring one of the animals, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

Steve Callaway was arrested on suspicion of grand theft and aggravated assault after authorities responded to a reported shooting in the Athol area.

Investigators say Callaway stole a vehicle belonging to George Bomar Jr., of Athol, and drove to the home of a friend, Darrell Montee.

Montee told investigators he did not recognize the car and yelled for the driver to leave. When the driver didn’t respond, Montee said, he fired several shots at the vehicle.

Bomar later confronted Callaway at Montee’s home and told investigators Callaway displayed a gun, so he called authorities. Deputies found Callaway hiding in Montee’s shop with a loaded gun, according to a press release.

One of Bomar’s dogs was injured, officials said.

Investigation is ongoing, and authorities say Montee could also face charges.
