In brief: Neighborhood Alliance holds open house
An open house by Neighborhood Alliance is being held at The Magic Lantern Theater in downtown Spokane, Saranac Building, 25 W. Main Ave., Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.
The open house is for people in Spokane County and Kootenai County communities to meet and talk with the new executive director of Neighborhood Alliance, Carol Sebastion, new board members, as well as leaders in neighborhoods such as West Plains, Glenrose, and Five Mile who are working with Neighborhood Alliance. Political candidates will also speak during the informal evening.
Sebastion, who replaced co-founder and former Executive Director Bonnie Mager, said, “The Alliance will begin to focus on Spokane County-Kootenai County interaction. Our shared issues are water, transportation, exponential growth, disappearing agricultural land as well as wetlands –all affecting our neighborhoods and quality of life. We see our role as being a central resource to address these issues.”

NIC sports clinic on sailing offered
North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits outdoor sports program will offer a clinic this month to teach participants how to sail, using a large Catalina 22 for instruction.
The clinic will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 20, 27 and Nov. 3 on NIC’s Yap-Keehn-Um Beach on Lake Coeur d’Alene.
The clinic will teach adults basic sailing skills, equipment use, nomenclature and technology. The boat has a heated cabin, and participants will get to learn on a quiet, off-season lake.
A fee of $195 covers the cost of instruction and all related equipment.
No experience is necessary, but participants should be able to swim. Space is limited, so sign up early to reserve a spot. For more information, call Outdoor Pursuits at 769-7809.
