Area Roundup: Dunn assists Gonzaga

Heather Dunn recorded 45 assists and 12 digs in leading Gonzaga to a 30-20, 32-30, 30-27 West Coast Conference win at home against Portland Saturday.

Senior Briawna Mueller had a strong performance for the Bulldogs (14-7, 2-3) with 10 kills and seven blocks.

Maria Clemens had 13 kills for the Pilots (7-12, 0-5).

“Eastern Washington fell to Sacramento State 30-27, 30-20, 30-26 in a Big Sky Conference match at Sacramento, Calif.

Hayley Hills led the Eagles (6-13, 5-3) with 20 kills.

Sacramento State (20-3, 8-0) won its 59th consecutive home conference match.

“Sarah Rusch had 19 kills for Whitworth in a 30-27, 32-34, 30-22, 30-17 Northwest Conference loss to George Fox at Newburg, Ore.

Holly Ridings had 50 assists for the Pirates (9-10, 4-6 NWC) and Amy Batchelder and Jennifer Panico had 23 kills each for George Fox (9-8, 4-6 NWC).

“Ashlee Lupfer earned 17 kills as Community Colleges of Spokane beat Blue Mountain 19-30, 30-19, 32-30, 30-16 in a NWAACC match at Pendleton, Ore.

Lisa Steinbach collected 10 blocks for the Sasquatch (20-10, 8-2). Kelsey Jorgensen had a game-high 21 kills for Blue Mountain (7-17, 2-8).

Men’s soccer

John Prugh scored in the 40th minute to lead Whitworth to a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory over Linfield at McMinnville, Ore.

Elly Bulega assisted on Prugh’s goal for Whitworth (9-2-1, 7-1).. Linfield (6-5-1, 2-5-1) managed eight shots.

“Jay Vela scored a hat trick in the first half leading Community Colleges of Spokane to a 4-1 NWAACC victory over Shoreline at Shoreline, Wash.

Ryan Chang scored CC Spokane (12-2-1, 11-1). Shoreline is 2-11 overall and in the NWAACC.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga fell 3-1 to nationally ranked Portland in a West Coast Conference match at Portland.

The Bulldogs (8-4-1, 0-1) tied the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute on a Christine Soma goal, but Portland (9-3, 1-0) took the lead for good in the 72nd minute.

“Kaylyn Plumb scored a late goal to give Whitworth a 2-1 Northwest Conference win over Linfield at McMinnville, Ore.

Whitworth (11-1, 8-1) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, only to see Linfield (5-6-1, 4-5) tie the game in the 16th minute.

“Community Colleges of Spokane and Shoreline played to a scoreless draw in NWAACC action at Shoreline, Wash.

Allison Seymour recorded the shutout for the Sasquatch (8-6-2, 8-3-2). Sarah Hartsell earned it for Shoreline (8-3-2, 8-3-2).

Cross country

Eastern Washington won the men’s and women’s team titles at the EWU Invitational in Cheney.

EWU’s Mattie Bridgmon (18:24) and Samantha Modderman (18:29) placed first and second on the women’s side.

Paul Limpf (25:01) paced the EWU men with a second-place finish.

“Washington State’s men’s and women’s teams placed 20th and 17th, respectively, at the NCAA Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

Sara Trane placed 39th (21:06) for the women and Andrew Jones crossed the line in 62nd (24:12) place for the men.

“Dak Riek (25:01) and Mark Moeller (25:03) finished first and second leading the Community Colleges of Spokane men to a win at the Runner’s Soul Bigfoot Open at Spokane Falls Community College.

CC Spokane women finished fourth overall.

Rowing

Washington State won the women’s varsity 4 and women’s varsity 8 races during the first day of the Head of the Oklahoma races at Oklahoma City.

Junior Hockey

Bret Kellogg scored three goals to lead the Spokane Braves to a 5-4 overtime victory over Beaver Valley in KIJHL play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Prep football

Austin Mannick threw for 240 yards and four touchdowns to lead Curlew to a 34-28 win over Waterville in Northeast 1B action at Curlew. Brandon Gregory carried the ball 29 times for 184 yards and a touchdown for Curlew (2-4). Josh Day led Waterville (0-4) with 147 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

Prep cross country

Joey Ward of Newport won the boys division of the Can-Am Invitational at Old Kettle Falls Recreation Area with a time of 16:43. Chantel Duenich of Deer Park won the girls side with a time of 19:49. Colville boys won the team title with 40 points and Riverside won the girls title with 58.
