Pirates roll past Pioneers

Milton Nelson and Tyler Mattair both topped the century mark as the Whitworth Pirates piled up 395 yards on the ground en route to a 48-7 romp over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in Northwest Conference play on Saturday in Portland.

Nelson finished with 128 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Mattair totaled 112 yards and a score on 24 rushes. Whitworth (5-1, 3-0) won its fifth straight game. Lewis & Clark fell to 0-5, 0-2.

Chris Ahsing rushed for 61 yards and two TDs for the Pirates, Adam Anderson finished with 69 yards and a TD and quarterback Kory Kemp added the team’s sixth rushing TD of the game.

Whitworth led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter and increased its lead to 41-7 at the half after scoring on six of its seven possessions.

Puget Sound 13, Willamette 7: Senior offensive lineman Cody Dean recovered a fumble by teammate James Olcott in the end zone with 2 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Loggers (3-3, 1-2 NWC) over the Bearcats (2-4, 1-1) in Tacoma.

Willamette managed to drive within scoring distance late in the game before Demetri Huffman intercepted a pass in the end zone to seal the win for Puget Sound.

Pacific Lutheran 48, Menlo 19: Chase Reed caught two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Lutes (5-1, 2-1 NWC) to a victory over the Oaks (1-6, 1-2) in Puyallup, Wash.

Neal Chalmers made six tackles, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble to lead PLU’s defensive effort.

Central Washington 49, Western Oregon 14: Matt Reilly completed 20 of 29 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns to lead the 18th-ranked Wildcats (5-1) to a non-conference victory over the Wolves (4-2) in Monmouth, Ore.

Johnny Lopez added 125 yards rushing and two scores for CWU.

South Dakota 24, Western Washington 10: Amos Allen rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown and Brooks Little caught four passes for 108 yards and a score to lead the Coyotes (4-3, 3-1) to a North Central Conference win over the Vikings (2-4, 1-4) in Vermillion, S.D.
