PARENTAL GUIDANCE

Should parents be required to read along with their kids’ assignments and write blog posts, as a teacher in New York has mandated? The Parents Council responds:

“I understand what the teacher is trying to do. He’s probably frustrated and digging deep to find a way – ANY way – to get the parents involved. I’m sympathetic, but I doubt this particular assignment for the parents will actually translate into better learning for the students.

“I would rather parents take the time they’d be spending on the blog, and instead spend it working directly with their children on academics. I think THAT would show a clear and positive impact.” – Posted by Laurie Rogers

Seems like this is just going to breed resentment. A few blog entries about a class reading doesn’t indicate parental involvement to me. And what if a parent won’t do his/her assignment, why should the child suffer more consequences?” – Posted by Debbie G.

“Parents who aren’t involved in their childrens’ educations aren’t very likely to suddenly jump at the chance to do homework. Parents already involved will probably balk at the idea of their child being graded on someone else’s efforts. I think it’s a lousy idea.” – Posted by Jennine
