Idaho Prep Roundup: Bonners Ferry advances
Miguel Mendez and Rob Hart had one goal and one assist apiece as Bonners Ferry (16-3-1) defeated Sugar-Salem 2-0 in the first round of the 3A state tournament in Buhl.
The Badgers advanced to today’s semifinal and will face American Falls, which defeated Bliss 5-2.
“Middleton edged Moscow 3-2 in the first round of the boys soccer 4A state tournament at the Bannock County Fairgrounds in Pocatello. Dom Trevison and Matt Martin scored goals for the Bears and keeper Garrett Rose made five saves. Moscow (12-5-1) will play Jerome, which fell 3-0 to Bonneville, in a loser-out match today.
Girls soccer
Dominique Alston scored two goals to lead Skyview to a 3-1 win over Moscow (6-7-3) in a 3A state tournament opener in Pocatello. Quincy Moore scored the Bears’ lone goal. Moscow will play Wood River in a loser-out match today.
Cross country
Cody Helbling finished the 3.1-mile run in 17 minutes, 20.86 seconds to take first and lead the Lake City boys to a first-place finish at the 5A Region I meet at Phillips Farm in Moscow. Coeur d’Alene was second and will join the Timberwolves at the state meet Oct. 27 at Freeman Park in Idaho Falls. On the girls’ side, CDA’s Kinsey Gomez finished in 20:08.90 to lead the Vikings to a second-place finish. Both Coeur d’Alene and Lake City, which took first, qualified for the state meet.
“Moscow and Sandpoint took first and second, respectively, at the 4A Region I meet in Moscow. The Bears’ Cody Wendt finished in 18:45.51 to take first place for the boys, while Sandpoint’s Megan Bartlett paced the girls, finishing in 20:22.80. Both teams qualified for the state meet.
Volleyball
Meg Ryan had 10 kills and Karyn Mockel added 31 assists and five aces as Mead wrapped up the top seed heading into the District 8 4A playoffs with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 Greater Spokane League victory over visiting North Central (2-8). The Panthers (10-0) will have a bye in the first round. … Elsewhere in the league, Eileen Chatfield, Kasey Jurich and Diana Drury had 11 kills apiece to lead University (6-4) to a 25-11, 25-23, 26-24 win over visiting East Valley (5-5).
