NHL : Blues keep Ducks winless on the road

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

The St. Louis Blues signed Paul Kariya, hoping he would add some much-needed offense.

So far, so good.

Kariya scored a goal and had three assists Tuesday night as the Blues kept Anaheim winless on the road by beating the Ducks 4-2 Tuesday night.

Kariya, who had 72 points for Nashville last season, has nine assists and 11 points for the Blues in his first seven games. Kariya credited his linemates, Keith Tkachuk and Brad Boyes, for helping with his spurt.

“(Tkachuk) got us going,” Kariya said. “He was going to the net, creating a lot of traffic, and it was nice to see him rewarded there.”

Boyes scored twice and has six goals and two assists. Tkachuk had a goal and two assists.

“It’s taken me 21 games just to score one (before),” Boyes said. “But I come here and it’s been good. It’s easy when you’re playing with those guys, but I still think we can improve.”

Andy McDonald and Mark Mowers scored for the Ducks, 0-5-1 on the road. One of those losses includes a game played against Los Angeles in London to start the season.

Penguins 1, Rangers 0: At Pittsburgh, Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 36 shots in another strong start and the Penguins won their third in a row by handing New York its second successive 1-0 loss.

It marked the first time in the long history of the Original Six franchise that the Rangers absorbed back-to-back 1-0 defeats, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Evgeni Malkin scored the only goal on a power play early in the second period to ruin a good night by Henrik Lundqvist, who made a succession of excellent saves while stopping 21 shots.

Blue Jackets 7, Blackhawks 4: At Chicago, Rick Nash had two goals and an assist, and Jiri Novotny scored twice to lead Columbus over the Blackhawks.

Sergei Fedorov, Nikolai Zherdev and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen also scored for the Blue Jackets. Nash extended his goal streak to four games.

Thrashers 5, Maple Leafs 4 (SO): At Toronto, Ilya Kovalchuk scored the winner in a shootout to give Atlanta a win over the Maple Leafs.

The Thrashers are 2-1 since general manager Don Waddell took over as coach after firing Bob Hartley because of a 0-6 start.

Avalanche 4, Oilers 2: At Edmonton, Alberta, Tyler Arnason had a goal and assist, and Colorado beat the Oilers.

Jaroslav Hlinka, Wojtek Wolski and Brett Clark also scored for Colorado.

Kings 6, Predators 0: At Los Angeles, former Spokane Chief Jason LaBarbera notched his second career shutout, Michael Cammalleri scored twice for an NHL-leading 10 goals, and the Kings handed Nashville its sixth straight loss.

LaBarbera stopped 17 shots.
