NBA : Stuckey breaks hand in victory
Detroit rookie Rodney Stuckey broke his left hand in the third quarter of the Pistons’ 104-85 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night at Auburn Hills, Mich.
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens when they get a better look at it tomorrow, but it is really disappointing,” said Pistons coach Flip Saunders. “He was unbelievable today – he really had it going.”
The first-round pick from Eastern Washington had 10 points in 13 minutes before he was injured late in the third quarter.
“It just got caught and my fingers went the wrong way,” Stuckey said. “I was in so much pain that I knew it was pretty bad.”
Jarvis Hayes scored 21 points to lead Detroit. Rasheed Wallace added 17 and Tayshaun Prince and Chauncey Billups each had 12.
Antawn Jamison led the Wizards with 14, all in the first half, while Caron Butler scored 12 and Gilbert Arenas added 11.
Blazers win starless game
It was supposed to be Portland’s first look at Kevin Durant, the player the Trail Blazers didn’t take in the draft in favor of Greg Oden.
Instead, it was a routine, albeit close, exhibition game.
Durant, the No. 2 pick in the draft by the Seattle SuperSonics, sprained his ankle on Tuesday and didn’t play at Portland when the Blazers beat the Sonics 109-107.
Oden, the top draft pick, was already out for the season after microfracture surgery on his right knee.
LaMarcus Aldridge had 31 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers, and Brandon Roy added 22 points.
Chris Wilcox’s 3-pointer put the Sonics up 49-48 before the break after trailing by as many as 13 points.
Luke Ridnour’s fadeaway jumper extended Seattle’s lead to 72-62. But the Blazers caught up late in the fourth quarter, when Aldridge hit a pair of free throws to narrow it to 101-99 with 2:03 remaining.
Portland kept it close until Martell Webster hit a 3-pointer to give the Blazers a 106-105 lead with 32.4 left.
After 9Ridnour hit a pair of free throws with 23.2 seconds left to give Seattle back the lead, Roy answered with a jumper and Steve Blake added a free throw for the winning margin.
Nick Collison led the Sonics with 17 points.
Heat deal Walker to Minnesota
The Heat traded three-time All-Star forward Antoine Walker to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a five-player deal that came one day after Miami completed a winless preseason.
Walker, backup center to Michael Doleac, oft-injured forward Wayne Simien and a conditional first-round draft pick were sent to Minnesota for swingman Ricky Davis and center Mark Blount.
