Gonzaga earns first win over Santa Clara

Lauren Zuckerman scored in the 83rd minute to break a tie and give the Gonzaga women’s soccer team its first win over Santa Clara, a 2-1 decision over the 12th-ranked Broncos in a West Coast Conference match Thursday at GU’s Martin Field.

The win marked the first time in 14 tries that Gonzaga has posted a victory over Santa Clara.

The Bulldogs improved to 10-5-1 and 2-2 in conference play while the Broncos fell to 10-4-3 and 2-2 in the WCC.

“Teresa Holt scored in the 109th minute to give Weber State (7-6-2, 3-1-1) a 1-0 double overtime victory over Eastern Washington (6-8, 1-4) in a Big Sky Conference match in Ogden, Utah.

Eagles senior Cyeeta Mott had five shots to give her 125 for her career, breaking Beth Russell’s record of 122.

Volleyball

Karly Sipherd had 15 kills and Ashley Miller added 39 assists to lead Nevada to a 31-29, 30-20, 30-28 Western Athletic Conference win over Idaho in Reno, Nevada.

Idaho fell to 9-12 and 5-5 in conference play while the Wolf Pack improved to 11-8 and 8-4.

“Krista Kelley had 26 kills and Crystal Matich added 53 assists as Santa Clara defeated host Gonzaga 32-30, 30-23, 30-26 in a West Coast Conference match.

Michelle Boevers had 12 kills to lead the Bulldogs, who fell to 15-9 and 3-5 in the WCC while the Broncos improved to 15-9 and 7-1.

“Hayley Hills had 24 kills as Eastern Washington edged Montana 30-26, 35-37, 40-38, 30-22, 17-15 in a Big Sky Conference match in Cheney.

Chenoa Coviare and Alysha Cook added 14 kills each for the Eagles, who improved to 9-13 overall and 8-3 in the BSC while the Grizzlies dropped to 8-13 and 4-7.

“Carly Ross had 18 kills and 27 digs to lead Columbia Basin to a 19-30, 30-27, 25-30, 30-24, 15-8 win over Community Colleges of Spokane in a matchup of the top two teams in the NWAACC.

Lisa Steinbach had 16 kills and Miranda Gouin dished out 55 assists to lead the Sasquatch.

CCS dropped to 22-11 and 10-3 in conference play while the Hawks improved to 28-0 and 12-0.

Basketball

Washington State seniors Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver were named to the Naismith Trophy preseason candidate watch list.

Also, the men’s intrasquad scrimmage scheduled for Saturday has been moved from Beasley Coliseum to Bohler Gym.

“The Big Sky Conference coaches picked Eastern Washington to finish eighth while media members picked the Eagles to finish last in the preseason polls.

The media picked Montana first, while the coaches selected Weber State.

“The Gonzaga women’s team will hold a free Blue and White scrimmage Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs traded defenseman Patrick Kozyra to Medicine Hat for a fifth-round bantam selection in the 2008 draft.

The Chiefs will host Seattle on Saturday.

“Grand Forks defeated the visiting Spokane Braves 2-0 in a KIJHL game.
