DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
Details: Instead of a morbid occasion, the Day of the Dead is actually a time of festivity in Mexico and other Latin American countries – a day to honor those who have died as well as to celebrate the continuation of life. Mexicans and others set up lavishly decorated altars with candles, mounds of peanuts and fruit, chocolate, pottery vases filled with marigolds and a pack of cigarettes for the spirits to enjoy. To teach others about the cultural significance of this holiday, the Latino Club of North Idaho College has put together a display.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Details: Every year, between 45,000 and 50,000 women and children are illegally trafficked into the United States for forced labor, according to the U.S. State Department. And Washington – with its extensive port system, access to the Pacific Rim and proximity to both Canada and Mexico – is one of the country’s two gateways for this version of modern-day slavery. This topic is the focus of Spokane Community College’s 11th annual Teri Dobler Domestic Violence Symposium.
