Big first boosts Chiefs
EVERETT – The Spokane Chiefs scored four goals in the first period and went on to defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 5-2 Friday in their preseason opener.
The Chiefs outshot the Winter Hawks 20-7 in the first period and held Portland to 20 shots overall.
Cody Esposito, Chris Bruton, Dustin Donaghy and Brett Bartman all scored for the Chiefs in the first period. After Portland scored twice in the second period, Pat Kozyra of the Chiefs closed out the scoring, making an empty-netter with 17 seconds remaining in the game.
Bartman, a rookie defenseman, and Tyler Johnson, who is from Spokane, both had two assists.
Goalie Darcy Kuemper, a third-round pick in 2005, made 18 saves for the Chiefs.
Spokane will play the Tri-City Americans at 11:30 this morning and the Seattle Thunderbirds at 3 p.m. Sunday as the Everett tournament continues. The Chiefs play one preseason game at home, Sept. 14 against Tri-City.
