Fall Arts: Visual arts

The Spokane Visual Arts Tour signals the official start of the fall season. It returns the first weekend in October with dozens of downtown galleries and businesses hosting special openings and numerous activities.

Other events that fill the autumn visual arts calendar include:

“Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum exhibition, “Drawn to the Wall III.” featuring the temporary installations of Richard Schindler, Gina Freuen and Ken Yuhasz of Spokane and Michelle Forsyth and Kevin Haas of Pullman. A public reception is Sept. 13, followed by a free walk-through Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. with Karen Kaiser, assistant curator for education.

Also showing is “Robert Sperry,” an exhibition of ceramic plates, in the Arcade Gallery. Gonzaga art professor Terry Gieber will give a free lecture, “The World of Robert Sperry,” on Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

The next major exhibit will be “Harriet Sanderson: Limbus,” Oct. 19 to Dec. 12.

“The Museum of Art at Washington State University in Pullman is showing “Fine Arts Faculty” through Sept. 22. “A Brief History of Photography: From the Joseph and Elaine Monsen Collection and the Washington Art Consortium” runs Sept. 28 through Dec. 15.

“The current exhibits at the University of Idaho’s Prichard Art Gallery in Moscow are “Scott Fife: The Idaho History Project,” and “Gerrit van Ness: Evening News” through Oct 6.

“WeekSpot: Next Frame Festival” runs Oct. 9 to 14, followed by “Brian Oglesbee: Water Series,” Oct. 19 to Dec. 1.

“Spokane’s Town and Country Studio Tour takes place the weekend of Sept. 15 and 16. For a complete listing of artists and locations, go to www.studioarttour.com.

“”In House,” an exhibit of works by Whitworth College art faculty, goes up Sept. 17 through Oct. 25 in the school’s Koehler Gallery. An opening reception is Sept. 18 at 5 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session by art faculty at 7 p.m.

“Eastern Washington University’s Gallery of Art is hosting “Carole Loeffler” Oct. 4 to Nov. 1 and follows with “Scott Bailey,” Nov. 8 to Dec. 7.

“The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture exhibit card includes “In Focus: Eileen Klatt – A Litany of Salmon” through Oct. 28. Other exhibits on view include “River of Memory: The Everlasting Columbia,” through Jan. 6 and “The Voices of Things: The Museum’s Collections” through Feb. 3. “Sports: Breaking Records, Breaking Barriers” runs Sept. 22 through Jan. 1.

“The Spokane Valley Studio Tour covers three days, Sept. 28 to 30. For more information visit www.valleystudiotour.com.

“The Spokane Carvers Association and Inland Empire Carvers return with the 18th annual “Artistry in Wood” show on Oct. 5 and 6 in Spokane Community College’s Lair Student Union.

“The 2007-08 Visiting Artist Lecture Series, “Art is not a thing; it is a way,” kicks off with Seattle artist Karen Ganz on Oct. 16 at Spokane Falls Community College and the MAC, and Oct. 17 at Eastern Washington University.

“Inland Craft Warnings has its annual three-day fine crafts sale at the Spokane Convention Center beginning Nov. 2.

“Yuletide returns to the Spokane Art School the weekend after Thanksgiving and local artists open their studios for holiday sales the first week in December.
