Soccer pollsters agree: The Gonzaga University men’s team is among the best in the country.

Back-to-back wins over nationally ranked opponents vaulted the Bulldogs into the national spotlight and onto the first two of four major polls to came out this week.

Gonzaga, which defeated previously top-ranked and defending national champion UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on the road the first weekend of the season and returned home for a 2-1 win over a Washington team that was ranked as high as 15th, earned the Zags the No. 12 spot in the Soccer America men’s Top 25 and 21st in the College Soccer News men’s Top 30. Two other polls come out today.

It marks GU’s first appearance in the national polls since October 2001 when it was ranked 16th by Soccer America.

•Gonzaga midfielder Ben Funkhouser from East Valley, whose first goal of the season and second of his career produced the 2-1 win over Washington, is the West Coast Conference men’s co-Player of the Week.

•Whitworth freshman forward Emile Rohde, who scored three goals in her third collegiate match to lead a 7-0 win over St. Martin’s, is the Northwest Conference women’s soccer Player of the Week.
