If there’s one room in the house that’s never big enough, it has to be the kitchen. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a simple way to “cook up” some extra space without an expensive (and messy) remodel? For do-it-yourselfers, there’s a simple solution. This kitchen island project is an easy, attractive and inexpensive way to add valuable storage and work space to any kitchen.

The island features a handsome and durable maple butcher block top and casters for convenience. Best of all, it adds eight square feet of counter space, two generous drawers and two big storage shelves (one with an optional wine rack) to the kitchen.

How to build it

Utilizing all straight cuts and simple construction techniques, the project is easy enough for beginners. Just cut out the pieces, laminate the top and assemble using screws, glue and nails. Once the project is put together, install the casters and drawers, oil the top and start cooking.

The island measures about 48 inches long by 24 inches wide by 36 inches tall.

How to order the plan

The Kitchen Island plan, No. 932, is $10.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions.

A package of kitchen furniture projects, No. C155, is $22.95 and includes this project plus plans for a stationary chopping block and a set of storage bins. Please include $4 for postage and handling and allow about two weeks for delivery.
