Free meals applications due

The state of Washington will continue to provide the 40 cents co-pay for lunch for students on the reduced-meal program in kindergarten through the third grade this year.

All students on the program can also get breakfast and the state will pay the 30 cents co-pay.

In order to receive these meals, a new application must be filled out to qualify, even if you qualified last year.

The deadline to turn in the application is Oct. 1.

For more information, call Doug Wordell at 354-7270.

Grant to fight obesity

Two Washington State University professors have received a $1.3 million grant from the USDA to form a team to evaluate ways to fight obesity in middle school students.

The team includes members from Spokane Public Schools and Washington State University and has found that fighting obesity will include addressing dietary intake, physical activities, sedentary behavior and environment.

The team is led by grant recipients Kenn Daratha and Ruth Bindler of WSU and includes members Sue Butkus, Tom Power and John Roll, also from WSU. Members from Spokane Public Schools include Amy Lutz and Doug Wordell. Robert Lutz, a community physician, is also a member.

Some suggestions from the team include making changes in the schools, such as removing all vending machines, high-calorie and high-fat a la carte items from the menu, adding fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat milk and whole-grain breads to the menus and offering sweetened dessert items no more than twice a week in schools.

Families and students should visit school-based fitness centers, take part in family field trips, encouraging the students to participate in school activities and after-school programs.
