Saving lands to be discussed

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

Wes Hanson and Gary and Tina Johnson will explain conservation easements Monday at a meeting of the Coeur d’Alene Audubon Society.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Hanson lives on a conservation easement farm south of Coeur d’Alene. He signed a conservation easement with the Inland Northwest Land Trust in 1997, protecting the land from development. He has helped preserve Cougar Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene as a wildlife refuge and promoted conservation easements to people in North Idaho.

The Johnsons live on land adjacent to Hanson and recently signed a conservation easement protecting their land.

The three will talk about what conservation easements; the rights property owners retain and give away under easements; the steps involved in creating and carrying out a conservation easement; and the costs and benefits.
