The Cougars have defeated a No. 1 team in Southern California once before. That was in 1988 when they topped Troy Aikman and UCLA 34-30 in the Rose Bowl. Quarterback Timm Rosenbach and running back Steve Broussard, currently assistants at WSU, played key roles for the Cougars in that game. … The Trojans go-to receiver this year was supposed to be Patrick Turner, but the junior has three drops in the first two games and the same number of receptions. … USC lost twice last season, at Oregon State and UCLA. The Cougars defeated both of those teams, also on the road. … USC fullback Stanley Havili is tied with split end David Ausberry for the team lead in receptions with five. … True freshman Kristofer O’Dowd has stepped in as the starter at center for the Trojans. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder also is making most of the line calls. … Reserve defensive tackle Matt Eichelberger has a knee sprain and didn’t make the trip.
