Area Roundup: Eastern comes back, outlasts Montana

Eastern Washington outlasted the Montana Grizzlies 24-30, 30-22, 30-26, 25-30, 15-12 in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match in Missoula on Saturday. The Eagles (4-9, 3-1) stormed back from an 8-4 deficit in the fifth set to capture the win. Hayley Hills had 20 kills and Amanda Yausie added 41 assists for the Eagles. Allison Reinstein had a career-high six blocks.

The Eagles also saw four players reach double-digits in digs. Mandy Daniels had 17 and Hills (13), JaNae Mortensen (11) and Kristen Ponce (10) round out the other digs leaders.

“Oregon (12-2, 1-1) cruised to a 30-24, 30-24, 30-22 Pac-10 Conference victory over Washington State in Eugene, Ore. Adetokunbo Faleti led the Cougars (9-7, 0-2) with nine kills.

“The North Idaho Cardinals won their sixth consecutive match with a 30-15, 30-6, 30-12 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over Colorado Northwestern at Rangely, Colo.

Emily Callaway led the Cardinals (15-5, 2-0) with seven kills, four aces and four blocks.

“The Idaho Vandals (5-8, 2-1) received 28 kills from Haley Larsen and 20 from Sarah Loney en route to a 30-18, 29-31, 30-26, 30-27 Western Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs.

“Whitworth dropped a 31-33, 30-21, 30-23, 30-20 Northwest Conference decision to Linfield in McMinnville, Ore. The Pirates (7-5, 2-2) were led by Katelyn Baker’s 29 kills.

“Community Colleges of Spokane used a balanced attack to beat visiting Treasure Valley 30-16, 30-19, 30-28. Miranda Gouin had 26 assists for the Sasquatch (13-5, 4-0 NWAACC).

Women’s soccer

Whitworth earned a 2-1 Northwest Conference win over Willamette at Salem, Ore. Whitney Ramsey scored her first goal of the season for the Pirates (6-0, 3-0 NWC) in the 10th minute.

“CC Spokane conceded two first-half goals in a 3-1 loss to the Columbia Basin Hawks at Spokane Falls CC. Ferris graduate Lindsay Allred scored for Spokane (2-6-1, 2-4-1 NWAACC) in the 52nd minute.

“North Idaho received four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over visiting Salt Lake.

Men’s soccer

Philippe Garre scored just before halftime to give Gonzaga (5-2) a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois at the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Classic in Corvallis, Ore.

“CC Spokane beat Columbia Basin 2-1 in an NWAACC game at SFCC. Jay Vela had a goal and an assist for CCS (7-2-1, 6-1-0).

“Ben Rotert scored in the eighth minute to help lead Whitworth (5-1-1, 3-0) over Willamette 3-0 in an NWC game at Salem, Ore.

“North Idaho conceded four goals in the first half of a 4-1 home loss to Salt Lake. Cole Abramson scored for NIC (3-1, 0-1 SWAC).

Cross country

Whitworth beat Gonzaga in the second annual Whitworth Short Course Invitational.

Gonzaga’s Colby Litzenberger (10 minutes, 6 seconds) placed first for the men and Whitworth’s Jo E Mayer (12:21) won the women’s division.
