THE SLICE

Spokane has long prided itself on being a “great place to raise kids.”

That assertion is partly true and partly evidence that some of us are willing to avert our eyes from heartbreaking social ills.

But to the extent that this city is, in fact, family-friendly, just why is that the case?

Think about it. What gives us the right to make that claim (and imply that many other places are unworthy of similar status)?

It must be our shared belief that camping builds character.

After all, there are lots of places with less crime than Spokane. And there are medium-sized cities that can compete with us when it comes to cultural offerings. But few areas are as nuts about camping.

If you have another theory, I’m all ears.
