Spain the source of doping maladies

Spain’s government and the national federation are not doing enough to contain cycling’s drug culture, the leader of the sport’s world governing body said Monday.

“The biggest problem we have in doping and cycling comes from Spain,” UCI president Pat McQuaid said in an interview with the Associated Press. “There seems to be a reluctance to completely clean the problem out in Spain.”

Speaking two days before the start of the world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, McQuaid accused the Spanish cycling federation of being soft on doping and criticized the government for not following up new laws with tough action.

•Brazilian tennis player Marcelo Melo was banned for two months for a doping violation.

The doubles specialist tested positive for the stimulant isometheptene June 10 at the Wimbledon warmup tournament at Queen’s Club, the International Tennis Federation said.

Brown off to Turkey

Second-year player Dee Brown will spend next season in Turkey.

Brown decided during the weekend to accept an offer from Turkish club Galatasaray rather than try to make the Utah Jazz roster in training camp, agent Henry Thomas announced.

•The Golden State Warriors signed Troy Hudson, adding a veteran free-agent guard to their young roster.

•Washington Wizards guard Roger Mason re-signed with the team, agreeing to a one-year deal.

Boxer Bussel dies

In Los Angeles, Jackson Bussell of Reno, Nev., died a day after collapsing at the end of a six-round bout in Calabasas, Calif. He was 28.

Bussell died Friday, the Los Angeles Police Department said. Police are investigating and an autopsy is planned.

He collapsed in the ring immediately after the bout Thursday, which ended in a draw with Javier Garcia.

•Samuel Peter became the World Boxing Council’s interim heavyweight champion after Oleg Maskaev dropped out of their Oct. 6 title fight with a back injury.

Sycamores fire West

Indiana State fired football coach Lou West and rehired Dennis Raetz, the man who led the Sycamores to their last winning season more than a decade ago, as interim coach.

West, a former defensive coordinator at Toledo, was 1-25 since taking over the Sycamores in 2005.

•Former NFL player Sean Jones, who manages investments for athletes, was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission with violating securities laws by refusing to allow examiners to inspect his business records.

•Russian weightlifter Oxana Slivenko set a world record with 607 pounds and won two gold medals at the World Weightlifting Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

•The Oklahoma River will be the site for next year’s U.S. Olympic trials for sprint canoe and kayak being held April 18-20.
