Scrappy Shadle takes down Lewis and Clark
The Shadle Park Highlanders cleared a major hurdle Thursday.
When they needed it most, the scrappy Highlanders stepped up and delivered a balanced attack, asserting themselves as one of the top volleyball teams in the Greater Spokane League this season.
The Highlanders handed host Lewis and Clark its first GSL loss of the season in a 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 19-25, 17-15 victory.
“The win was huge for us,” said Shadle senior Brianne Brown, who had the match-winning kill. “It was awesome because I didn’t think I was doing very good. We get to move up in the standings and we haven’t beat LC in a long time, so this is big.”
In the decisive fifth game, Shadle (4-1), which placed eighth in the State 4A tournament last year, jumped out to a 9-2 lead courtesy of a slew of hitting errors by LC (5-1).
The Tigers – last year’s runners-up at state – chipped back, catching up with the Highlanders at 14-all on a Kristen Santos ace. Shadle earned a match point on the next play when an Oceana Bush block sailed long by inches.
Bush came up with an explosive kill on the ensuing play, holding off one match point, before another Tiger block went long and Brown killed an over pass to seal the win for the Highlanders.
Brown, Lexie Pettersen and Amanda Bettinson collected nine kills each to lead Shadle.
Junior setter Lindsay Niemeier finished with 40 assists and junior libero Kaylee Rector had a match-high 18 digs.
“These kind of wins are confidence-builders for us,” Shadle coach Brooke Cooper said. “We know we do good when we play together, and to put it together when it mattered the most is just a great feeling.”
Bush led all players with 21 kills and added 13 digs for LC, which survived a five-game thriller on Tuesday against North Central.
“We needed to change the game early and we just didn’t,” LC coach Julie Yearout said. “Shadle played great – they’ve come a long way, and coming off the game with NC, where it was basically a battle for our lives, I just don’t think we had another one in us.”
Senior Laurie Yearout finished with 20 assists and eight digs and junior Chloe Rowand had 12 kills and five blocks for LC.
