OUTHUNT
No inside influence
Branch-antlered bull elk permits were increased from 77 to 86 for modern rifle hunters in the Blue Mountains this year.
“If you beat the high odds to draw one of those tags, you should have an excellent hunt,” said Pat Fowler, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist in Walla Walla.
Indeed, Fowler is among the lucky.
“I drew one of the three Wenaha (Wilderness) Unit permits this year,” he said, noting that he’s living proof that the state special permit drawings are not rigged.
“It’s my first permit since 1983.”
