Tuesday’s results
Orioles 8, Rangers 1: At Arlington, Texas, Scott Moore and Luke Scott hit early home runs and Baltimore ruined Texas’ home opener. The Orioles have the league’s best record and a six-game winning streak, already matching their longest of last season. Moore led off the second with a homer, and Scott followed an inning later with a two-run shot that made it 4-0 off Jason Jennings. Aubrey Huff matched a career high with four hits, and drove in four runs.
Royals 5, Yankees 2: At Kansas City, Mo., in a matchup of top young pitchers, Brian Bannister bested Phil Hughes as the Yankees opened a stretch that has them playing 18 of 20 games on the road. Ross Gload drove in two runs for the Royals, who at 5-2 under new manager Trey Hillman are off to their best start since opening 2003 with nine consecutive wins.
Indians 4, Angels 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer off Justin Speier with two outs in the ninth inning, and Jake Westbrook earned his first complete game since 2006 to lead Cleveland over Los Angeles. Vladimir Guerrero homered for the Angels.
Red Sox 5, Tigers 0: At Boston, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Manny Delcarmen and Julian Tavarez combined for a five-hit shutout as Boston won its home opener and kept Detroit winless this season. The Tigers, with the big leagues’ second-highest payroll, are 0-7 for the first time since dropping their first nine games in 2003 en route to an A.L.-record 119 losses.
Athletics 9, Blue Jays 8: At Toronto, Ryan Sweeney hit a tiebreaking triple in the ninth, and Oakland ended the Blue Jays’ three-game winning streak.
