Nun to talk peace
The Venerable Thubten Chodron, an American nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, will discuss “Peaceful Means in a Not-So-Peaceful World” on Friday and next Saturday at North Idaho College.
Chodron, ordained in 1977, has practiced under the guidance of the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan masters and published several books on Buddhist philosophy and meditation.
In 2003, she founded Sravasti Abbey, a Buddhist monastic community in Newport, Wash.
She will speak Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and next Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in Todd Hall in the Molstead Library on NIC’s Coeur d’Alene campus. Admission is free.

Poetry Praise
Jesus is the Answer Apostolic Church, 1803 E. Desmet Ave., will present its third annual Poetry Praise today at 4 p.m.
The event will include poets, silent praise dancers, singers, drummers, musicians, step-teams and more.

Church concerts
“Mt. Spokane Church, 6311 E. Mount Spokane Park Drive, will present a Country Music and Family Fun Night today at 5 p.m.
The evening will feature the JCW Band, dinner and dancing. The cost is $3 per person or $5 for a family of four.

“The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present Cheney High School’s Music ‘n Motion performing group on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.
The evening will include a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and wine. Tickets are $15 ($7.50 tax-deductible); proceeds will benefit the church’s youth summer mission trip to Lewiston.

“The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will present pianist Gennie Gregg on Sunday at 7 p.m.
The concert is part of the church’s Sundays at Seven series, which celebrates the restoration of its grand piano. There is a suggested donation of $20.

“Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will host a piano and strings concert at 7 p.m. Sunday as part of its Music in Millwood series.
The concert will feature music by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy and more. Scheduled performers include pianist Rachelle Ventura, violinist/violist Jay Prior and violinists Tom Bandar and Andrienne Gore. Admission is a nonperishable food item for the Spokane Valley Food Bank.
“Pasadena Park Nazarene Church, 8822 E. Upriver Drive, will host The Beene Family quartet in concert at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
The Tennessee-based gospel quartet has been a frequent visitor to the church. Admission is by donation.
Baha’is of Spokane
The Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Spokane will host Erica Toussaint, a member of the National Spiritual Assembly, and Kevin Locke, a Lakota/Sioux performer and educator, today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone.

Bible teachers
Dr. Chuck Flynn and his wife, Mary Ann, international Bible teachers with a prophetic anointing, will speak Sunday through Tuesday at New Hope Assembly of God, 1008 S. Division St. in Pinehurst, Idaho.

Extraterrestrial talks
Gonzaga University will host a “Physics and the God of Abraham VII: Physics, Faith and the Question of Extra Terrestrials” lecture series from Sunday through Tuesday in the Jepson School of Business’ Wolff Auditorium.
Eric Kincannon will discuss “How Should We Treat ETs?” on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, Marie George will speak about “Christianity and Extraterrestrials: a Catholic Perspective” at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Chris Stoughton will discuss “How Astronomers are Searching for ETI.”

Tea and style show

Food fundraisers
“Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road, will host a spaghetti dinner and movie fundraiser next Saturday at 6 p.m. to help fund a mission trip to Mexico.

“The Knights of Columbus at St. Paschal’s Catholic Church will host a breakfast from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the basement of the school, 2521 N. Park Road.
The menu will feature French toast, German scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns and a fruit cup. Admission is by donation; proceeds go to the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.
