Area roundup: CCS wins 10th straight
If only every inning could be the second inning.
Jessie Utt smashed a three-run homer in the first game and a two-run blast in the nightcap – both in the second inning – to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane to an 11-0, 6-2 NWAACC softball sweep of Treasure Valley Sunday at Spokane Falls Community College.
Heather Coulter pitched a two-hitter to win the opener and pitched the final three innings to earn a save in the nightcap.
CC Spokane has won 10 consecutive games.
Baseball
The Arizona State Sun Devils used an eight-run ninth inning to claim a 16-13 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Washington State Cougars at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The Sun Devils (30-4, 6-3) hit three home runs in the ninth inning. Ike Davis hit the game-winner, his second of the game, and also picked up the victory in relief.
Paul Gran hit his seventh home run for WSU (19-15, 3-6).
“Jon Karcich hit two of the Broncos’ four home runs and Santa Clara (19-13, 5-4) claimed a 9-5 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga at Patterson Baseball Complex.
Marcus McKimmy drove in three runs for Gonzaga (18-16, 2-6).
Gonzaga hosts Washington at 6 p.m. today.
“Pacific Lutheran swept a Northwest Conference doubleheader from the Whitworth Pirates (11-23, 10-18), completing a sweep of the four-game series.
Matt Akridge doubled twice and homered to lead the Lutes (18-12-2, 15-9) to a 12-5 win in the first game. Akridge homered again in a 15-2 win in the second game.
Women’s golf
The University of Washington’s Karinn Dickinson fired her second consecutive even par-71 to win the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford, Calif., on Saturday.
The Huskies were second in the team standings, four shots behind tournament-host Stanford.
Washington State was ninth in the team standings. Two Cougars finished in the Top 25 – Jessica Black at 16th and Amy Eneroth at 21st.
“Chelsea Kenner shot a six-over 79 to claim second place and lead the Community Colleges of Spokane to the team title at the Bigfoot Invitational at Esmeralda GC.
The Sasquatch had 245 strokes, five less than Columbia Basin.
Treasure Valley and Columbia Basin rounded out the field.
Katie Sorenson of CCS was fourth with an 81.
Men’s golf
Walla Walla had three of the top five individuals – including medalist Sam Whitaker at 68 – to win the team title at the Bigfoot Invitational at Esmeralda GC.
Walla Walla shot a 280, seven strokes better than CC Spokane.
CCS’s Jason Azzarito was tied for second, one stroke behind Whitaker.
