Walters will coach Dons
San Francisco lured former NBA player Rex Walters away from Florida Atlantic to take over its men’s program.
Walters, who had a 31-33 record in two seasons for the Owls, takes over for Jessie Evans, who was forced to take a leave of absence in the middle of last season and then was fired last month. Eddie Sutton took over the program on an interim basis for the remainder of the season as the Dons finished 10-21 in their third straight losing season.
Walters will be the third new coach in the eight-team West Coast Conference, following Tom Asbury at Pepperdine and Bill Bayno at Loyola Marymount.
Walters was selected 16th overall by New Jersey in the 1993 NBA draft and played seven seasons for the Nets, Philadelphia and Miami.

Walker open about disorder
Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker once played Russian roulette with a loaded pistol as he struggled with a personality disorder.
“To challenge death like I was doing, you start saying, ‘there’s a problem here,’ ” he said during an interview on ABC’s “Nightline.”
Walker suffers from dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. His experiences are chronicled in his book, “Breaking Free,” which is released this week.
The 46-year-old Walker was a star running back at Georgia and in the pros. He says he had the condition during his playing days but didn’t realize it. He doesn’t remember winning the Heisman in 1982 or darker events, such as threatening his then-wife.
