Fields strikes out 10 in Gonzaga’s win
Tyson Van Winkle had a double, home run and four runs batted in and Gonzaga scored six runs in the second inning of an 11-5 West Coast Conference baseball win over visiting Portland on Friday.
Pitcher Matt Fields (6-2) showed excellent command for the Bulldogs (21-16, 3-6). Fields struck out 10 and surrendered two unearned runs in 7 2/3 innings. The 10 strikeouts were a team high this season.
The Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate during their big second inning.
Clayton Shaw went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Pilots (17-21, 2-8).
•Washington suffered its fourth straight defeat in a 10-5 loss to California in Pacific-10 Conference action in Berkeley, Calif.
The Bears (25-9-2, 6-4) grabbed the lead early with a pair of runs in the second inning on a Bradley Boyer error. California scored three more runs in the third inning and never relinquished the lead.
Cam Nobles gave up eight runs over 5 2/3 innings to suffer the loss on the mound for the Huskies (23-13, 3-4). Boyer was 3 for 5 with two RBIs to lead UW.
•Washington State’s Pacific-10 Conference game in Tucson, Ariz., was tied in the 11th inning at press time.
Softball
Anjelica Selden surrendered three hits and struck out 14 to lead UCLA past Washington 2-1 in a Pac-10 game in Seattle.
A solo home run in the fifth inning from Amanda Kamekona gave the Bruins (36-6, 9-2) all they would need for the win. The Huskies (25-15, 4-6) scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth, but managed nothing more.
Bailey Stenson went 2 for 3 at the plate for Washington.
Women’s tennis
Nationally ranked Santa Clara blanked Gonzaga 4-0 in the West Coast Conference tournament in Moraga, Calif.
The loss snapped a five-match win streak for the Bulldogs (9-13). The Gaels improved to 15-7.
•Whitworth advanced to the Northwest Conference tournament championship with a 5-4 semifinal win over Pacific Lutheran in Yakima.
The Pirates (17-4) will take on Linfield for the title.
Men’s tennis
Gonzaga fell 4-0 to San Diego in the West Coast Conference tournament in Moraga, Calif.
The Bulldogs (6-16) got wins from Zack Radetzky in No. 4 singles and Cooper Fratt in No. 5 singles, San Diego improved its record to 11-10.
•Whitworth was upset by Willamette 4-3 in the first round of the Northwest Conference tournament in Yakima.
Willamette (9-9) took two of three doubles matches and split six singles matches with the Pirates (13-11).
Track
Mike Carpenter destroyed a 24-year-old University of Idaho record in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 17-feet, ¾ inches at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.
Vandals senior Marcus Mattox set another Idaho school record at the relays with a hammer throw of 205-5. Mattox bettered the previous record of 204-7 set in 2006 by Matt Wauters.
The Vandals won four titles – men’s pole vault, men’s hammer throw, women’s pole vault and men’s triple jump.
•Washington State senior Meghan Leonard broke the women’s school steeplechase record with a time of 10 minutes, 16.36 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Also, Marissa Tschida broke her freshman school javelin record with a toss of 161-8.
•The Whitworth men stand in first place and the women in second after the first day of competition at the Northwest Conference Championships in Newberg, Ore.
The Pirates men find themselves atop the leaderboard following Cody Stelzer’s record jump of 6-10 ¾ in the high jump.
Kristen Dormaier took second in the women’s long jump with a personal-record distance of 17-3 ¼.
