Rangers clinch series in New Jersey’s house

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

The New York Rangers rocked the New Jersey Devils’ house like no team and rolled right into the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Rangers trailed for 18 seconds in the first period before scoring four straight times and holding on for a 5-3 victory Friday night in Newark, N.J., that ended the best-of-7 series in five games.

New Jersey’s John Madden was awarded a penalty shot with 7:08 left in the third period after Michal Rozsival dragged him down with a sweeping dive with his stick. Madden couldn’t net the tying goal when his backhander at the right post was stopped by Henrik Lundqvist’s pads.

Brandon Dubinsky sealed New York’s second straight 5-3 win with an empty-net goal with 59.1 seconds left.

Never had a team won three road games against New Jersey in a playoff series, but the Rangers did it in the first season at the Devils’ new arena, Prudential Center, affectionately known as “The Rock.”

Red Wings 3, Predators 2 (OT): At Detroit, Johan Franzen scored 1:48 into overtime, lifting the Red Wings to a win over Nashville and a 3-2 lead in their first-round series.

Valtteri Filppula, who scored Detroit’s first goal, poked the puck away and Franzen ended up with it and beat Dan Ellis with a backhander.

•Red Wings forward Kris Draper said Nashville’s Jordin Tootoo intentionally stepped on his back when both were going for a puck along the boards in Game 4 of their first-round series.

Ducks 5, Stars 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Teemu Selanne and Ryan Getzlaf each had a goal and an assist to lead the Ducks to victory over Dallas and trim the Stars’ lead in the first-round series to 3-2.

The defending Stanley Cup-champion Ducks, on the brink of going home for the season, scored three times in the third period to break open a tight, physical game.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 40 saves for Anaheim.
