Cougars edge Zags with 3-run 9th inning rally
Travis Coulter’s two-out single scored Shea Vucinich to punctuate a three-run ninth inning and host Washington State dumped Gonzaga 9-8 in a nonconference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field.
WSU (20-18) trailed Gonzaga (23-17) 8-6 in the final frame, and Greg Lagried began the rally with a single. Alex Burg singled to move pinch runner Simi Reynolds to second and both runners advanced a base on a fielder’s choice. Vucinich then hit a double to draw the game to a 8-8 tie.
Drew Heid hit a two-run home run in the second inning for Gonzaga.
Tennis
Eastern Washington’s Art Karas was named the Big Sky conference player of the week for his 2-0 performance in singles and doubles play over the weekend, sweeping each of his singles contests in straight sets. Karas guided EWU to wins over Weber State and Montana, which helped them to a second-place finish in the Big Sky.
Golf
The Washington State University women’s golf team carded a second-round total of 209 at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Palos Verdes (Calif.) Golf Club. The Cougars are led by Tracy Broders and Amy Eneroth who each have scores of 12-over 142 and are tied for 29th.
•After two rounds of play, the Eastern Washington University women’s golf team is in third place, seven strokes behind leader Portland State at the Foothills Golf Club in Phoenix. Kellie Holmstedt is also in third place with a 5-over 149 and is three strokes behind leader Ali Carter from Northern Arizona.
•PGA professional and Ritzville resident Ryan Benzel shot a 6-under 138 and won the Callaway Golf Invitational at Olympic course in Bremerton, Wash. He needed a one-hole playoff to outlast fellow PGA professional Brian Thornton to earn the $4,000 top prize
•The University of Idaho women’s golf team is in fifth place at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after two rounds of play. Kelly Nakashima leads Idaho with a 7-over 151
