CCS athletes third in multi-events

Community Colleges of Spokane athletes are in third place after the first day Monday of the NWAACC multi-events championships in Vancouver, Wash.

Tim Armstrong has 3,037 points in the decathlon, which is led by Bruce Burbank of Lane with 3,437 points. CCS’s Sam Hale is sixth with 2,961.

In the heptathlon, Taylor Cook of CCS has 2,274 points to 2,455 for leader Brooklyn Holton of host Clark.

The rest of the NWAACC track and field championships will be at Spokane Falls Community College May 22-23.

•Idaho throwers Russ Winger and Mykael Bothum are the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s field athletes of the week, respectively.

Winger, a senior, reached NCAA regional qualifying marks in three events, setting a meet record at the Cougar Invitational in the shot put (65 feet, 11 inches), winning the discus (190-0) and throwing the hammer 203-2 for fourth place.

Bothum, a junior, broke the Cougar Invite meet and school records with a toss of 51-5 3/4.

Golf

Senior Jordan Mason’s hole-in-one on the 156-yard, par-3 second hole with an 8 iron during the second round and sophomore Kevin Tucker’s sizzling first round highlighted Washington State’s showing on the 36-hole first day of the Pac-10 men’s championships in Fairfax, Calif.

Tucker, who opened the day with a 3-under-par 68, matching WSU’s third lowest single round score in tournament history, followed with a 74 in the second round and his even-par 142 ties him for 17th. Mason had rounds of 75-74 for a 149.

Stanford’s 3-under 707 leads Cal (708) and UCLA (709) midway through the tournament. Washington’s Tze Huang Choo and Kevin Chappell of UCLA share the lead at 4-under 138.

•A disastrous fourth hole, in which the Vandals were a combined 13 strokes over par, helped drop Idaho into sixth place, 23 strokes behind leader New Mexico State after the first round of the 54-hole Western Athletic Conference men’s tournament in San Jose, Calif.

Idaho, led by sophomore David Nuhn’s 2-over 74, are at 21-over 309. New Mexico State is at 2-under 286.

The tournament runs through Wednesday.

•The Washington women, making their 14th NCAA appearance in 15 seasons, will be the No. 16 seed in the Central Regional May 8-10 in Austin, Texas. Pac-10 rival UCLA is the No. 1 seed in Austin.

The top eight teams and top two individuals at each of three regional sites will qualify for the NCAA Championships May 20-23 in New Mexico.

Baseball

Drew Heid of Gonzaga, who batted .667 with five doubles and a home run among 10 hits, is the West Coast Conference player of the week for last week.

The sophomore also scored six runs and drove in five as the Bulldogs went 2-2 during the week, including a 2-1 series win over WCC rival Saint Mary’s.
