Will Spears get another stab?

Britney Spears may get a shot at redemption during this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Widely panned for her glazed-over performance at last year’s show, Spears is in negotiations with MTV to make an appearance at the Sept. 7 ceremony, a network spokesperson said Tuesday.

While nothing has been finalized – only Lil Wayne and the Jonas Brothers are confirmed so far – Spears is already appearing in promotional ads for the telecast.

“This is for real,” she tells VMA host Russell Brand in one of the two spots.

Spears’ 2007 appearance was heavily hyped to be her comeback after months of negative publicity and erratic behavior. Her disheveled look and bleary routine during “Gimme More” was the most talked about performance not only of the show, but perhaps the year.

Since then, Spears, 26, has appeared to have cleaned up her act. She guest appearances on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” earlier this year were well-received.

Spears is working on a new album, and has shot video footage that will be used in Madonna’s upcoming tour.

It all starts with the material

Speaking of Madonna, the upscale French fashion house Givenchy will help dress the singer for her upcoming “Sticky & Sweet” world tour.

Madonna is expected to wear a frock coat in black stretch satin during an opening number.

The other ensemble, to be worn in the third act, is a long cape over a black dress with colored ribbons “to give it a Gypsy look.”

Currency events, take one

A music producer has sued Vanessa Hudgens for $5 million, claiming the “High School Musical” actress and her father have repeatedly violated a contract and failed to pay him his share of her earnings.

Johnny Vieira claims the agreement – reached before Hudgens landed the “HSM” role – called for him to equally share in advances, royalties and merchandising.

Currency events, take two

Tori Spelling won’t reprise her role as Donna Martin in The CW’s “Beverly Hills 90210” spinoff after all.

Spelling reportedly pulled out of the production after learning she was getting paid significantly less per episode than co-stars Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty, also alumni of the original show.

No heroes here

Hayden Panettiere, who had some fictional father problems on “Heroes,” is dealing with real-life daddy issues.

The 18-year-old actress’ father, Alan Panettiere, was arrested for felony domestic violence Monday morning after allegedly hitting her mother in the face.

TMZ.com reported the couple were with Hayden at a Hollywood benefit where Alan felt his wife was “disrespecting” him. At home the argument escalated into physical violence.
