Umps boycott conference call
Umpires want baseball to take another look at instant replay.
Umps said their governing board voted Tuesday to boycott a conference call with management intended to discuss implementing replay, angry that their concerns aren’t being addressed.
Major League Baseball responding by saying it canceled the Wednesday call because it doesn’t have a replay agreement with the union.
“A lot of the procedural issues necessary for instant replay to be implemented need to be worked out,” World Umpires Association spokesman Lamell McMorris said. “Major League Baseball needs to step up to the plate and iron out these issues.”
Yaz has surgery
Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, underwent heart bypass surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after experiencing chest pains.
The 68-year-old was an 18-time All-Star and spent his entire career with the Boston Red Sox.
Orioles break record
Oriole Park at Camden Yards hit the 50 million mark in attendance Tuesday night, reaching the milestone quicker than any ballpark in baseball history. The stadium opened in 1992 as the exclusive home of the Baltimore Orioles, who moved in after residing at Memorial Stadium since 1954.
Clearing the bases
Billy Wagner has more pain and swelling in his pitching elbow, and the New York Mets’ closer is out indefinitely and might not return this season. … Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler might be able to avoid season-ending surgery for a sports hernia after he learned there was probably no torn muscle in the left side of his groin area.
