How do I …. translate Web pages?
We think the simplest site for language translation is the Google Translator. It’s at translate. google.com. You either cut and paste text there, or you can translate an entire Web page.
Security Watch: A new term has arisen: blended threats. That refers to a combination of threats to compromise a victim. Such as, being enticed to click on a Web link sent by e-mail. The site might be legitimate but someone may have placed malware on that site which people might click on, whether it’s an ad, a survey or something else.
We suggest three steps to protect against that threat: make sure you use a firewall; update your security software (such as Norton 360); and make sure you run regular scans with the tools you have. A free tool for that purpose is Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Video challenge: The .TXT Video Challenge involves a Walla Walla video called “Walla Walla, The Tour Starts Here.” It’s at http:// www. youtube.com/ watch?v=_eBoz NoDcdU&feature =related.
The video challenge is to identify one vegetable, one bird and one fruit seen during the clip. Answers should be e-mailed to TXT@ spokesman.com. Winner receives a $5 coffee card. Past winners are not eligible.
Small screen: (A regular feature of Zipfile, in which we highlight new services on mobile phones.) You have plenty of Web search sites to find video for your desktop or laptop, such as YouTube, Truveo and Pixie. Now there’s a site just for finding video formatted for the small screen. The search site is Vuclip.com. It’s just expanded its services and claims to have an index of several million videos. It also states it supports about 2,000 different cell phones.
Jargon 2.0: Boolean. (adj.)
Originally a math term, Boolean has become entrenched in search-engine terminology.
Boolean search uses operators such as AND, OR and NOT. Used in conjunction with keywords, Boolean search can reveal very specific results. For example, a search for “recipe AND chocolate AND chip AND cookies NOT walnuts” will produce recipes for chocolate chip cookies that do not contain walnuts.
