Scoop found by keen-eyed youths

Nearly 100 eagle-eyed kids from across the region quickly spotted Scoop Reporter hiding among advertisements in last week’s Voices and called the newspaper. The first seven who spoke with contest master Marsha Ovnicek will win free ice cream, an official Reporter’s Notebook and are this week’s Honorary Cub Reporters.

•Kathryn Munro, 11, who attends Greenacres Middle School and is the daughter of Jeff Munro. She spotted Scoop on page 8 of last Thursday’s Valley Voice.

•Abby Marshall, 8, who attends Wilson Elementary and whose parent is Maisie Bauer. She found Scoop hiding on page 6 of the South Side Voice.

•Andrew Johnson, 8, a Ridgeview Elementary School student whose grandmother is Carla Brown and whose dad is Shawn Johnson. Andrew discovered Scoop on page 13 of the North Side Voice.

•Aspen Tichey, 11, a Windsor Elementary School student whose parent is Adam Tichey. She uncovered Scoop on page 9 of the West Plains Voice

•Kate McCloud, 6, who attends Lutheran Academy of the Master in Coeur d’Alene and whose parent is Laura McCloud. Kate spotted Scoop on page 8 of the Prairie Voice.

•Elizabeth Westervelt, 11, a Lake Middle School student, whose parent is Jennifer Westervelt, spotted Scoop hiding on page 11 of Saturday’s Handle Extra. •Calvin Crawford, 7, who is home-schooled and whose parent is Jeff Crawford, found Scoop hiding on page 9 of Saturday’s Valley Voice.

Tickets are on sale for the Spokane County Interstate Fair, running Sept. 5 through Sept. 14. Buying tickets in advance offers savings on admission, rodeo and concert tickets.

Signup under way for public schools

The office at Spokane Public Schools is open and available for questions for students and parents who haven’t registered for the new school year. Classes will begin on Tuesday.

A birth certificate or verification of age is needed to register, along with a completed Washington State Certificate of Immunization, with the month, day and year of inoculation.

Information regarding immunization can be found on the Spokane Public School Web site at www.spokaneschools.org/StudentSupport/HealthServices/Immunization.stm or call the district’s Health Services department at 354-7298.

Youth council seeks members

The Chase Youth Commission Teen Advisory Council is seeking new members for the 2008-2009 school year. TAC gives teenagers and youth the opportunity to voice their opinions, while providing a forum for them to make a difference.

The Teen Advisory Council works with the Chase Youth Commission to bring youth issues to the attention of local governments and provide a communication link to the schools.

Upcoming projects include: the Youth Issues Candidates Forum, Chase Youth Awards, Spokane’s Promise Alliance Youth Summit, a Youth Empowerment Workshop for the Neighborhoods USA Conference, held in Spokane in May 2009; and BOBfest – Battle of the Bands.

The launch meeting will be held Sept. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Spokane City Council Chambers in the lower level of Spokane City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.
