Spokane Valley residents complete basic training

Two local Spokane Valley residents recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Michael Henry is the son of Robert and Sue Henry of Nine Mile Falls and is a 2005 graduate of East Valley High School.

Air Force Airman Courtney Whipple graduated from West Valley High School in 2006 and is the daughter of Kerry Summers of Port Angeles, Wash., and granddaughter of Sandy Farwell of Otis Orchards.

•Three area residents graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Army Pvt. Robert Harmon is the son of Mona Autrey of Spokane and grandson of James Harmon of Spokane Valley. Harmon graduated in 2002 from Lewis and Clark High School.

Army Pvt. Ashley Bordges is the daughter of Susan Bordges of Spokane Valley and graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory School in 2007.

Army National Guard Pvt. Angelia Cordova is the daughter of Vicki Solis of Spokane.

•Eastern Washington University announced students awarded scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Kristen Nauditt and Jon Mancheni were both awarded $500 Charles P. Lund Music Scholarships. Nauditt is a student at Gonzaga Prep and the daughter of Lauri Nauditt of Spokane. Mancheni is the son of Jeff and Pam Mancheni of Spokane and is a student at Mead High School.

Corey Turner was awarded a $2,000 Presidential Scholarship. He is a student at East Valley High School and is the son of Richard and Miriam Turner of Otis Orchards.

•The following area residents recently received scholarships from the University of Montana for the 2008-2009 school year.

Jillian Wilson of Spokane Valley was awarded a $400 Dorcas Keach Northey Scholarship. She is a 2006 University High School graduate and the daughter of Frank and Paula Wilson of Spokane Valley.

Badria Alabdullah of Spokane received a $150 Andrew C. Cogswell Scholarship. She is the daughter of Abdullah Alabdullah and Andrea Zaerman of Spokane and graduated in 2005 from St. Michael’s Academy.

Jared Griffard and Jacob Wood, 2008 graduates of Coeur d’Alene High School, have each received a $750 Steve Omi Scholarship.

Giffard planned to attend Gannon University in Erie, Pa.

Wood will be a student at Golden West College in Huntington, Calif.

Geoff Palachuk of Spokane Valley received a $3,000 Dean Scholarship from the University of Oregon for the 2008-2009 academic year. He is the son of Marie Palachuk of Spokane Valley and a 2005 graduate of Central Valley High School.

Barrett Anderson, a graduate of Cheney High School, was recently awarded a Faculty Scholarship from Whitworth University. He is the son Bill and Mallory Anderson.

April McDonough of Cheney was awarded a $1,500 college scholarship at Fairchild Air Force Base through Scholarships for Military Children. She is the daughter of Dennis and Sally McDonough of Cheney.

Mallissa Watts, a graduate of Northwest Christian School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Ark-La-Tex Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, for academic excellence.

Aubrey Bot of Spokane received a $1,000 North Dakota State University Development Foundation Scholarship. She is the daughter of David and Melanie Bot of Spokane.

•The Pullman Chamber of Commerce recently announced residents who will be inducted into the Pullman Walk of Fame for their contributions to the city of Pullman.

Rueben Mayes is honored in the Famous Sports Figure category. Mayes played for the WSU Cougars, where he became All-American and finished 10th in the Heisman Trophy race.

Bob and Carol Smawley are recognized in the Distinguished Resident category. They have volunteered with the Parks and Recreation commission, the Council on Aging, Friends of the Pullman Library, Pullman Chamber, Lions, the Hospital Foundation and others.

John and Mary Ellen Gorham are honored in the WSU Presidents and Distinguished Members of the WSU Community category. They have lived in Pullman since 1942 and have served in various community roles. The former is a professor and veterinary researcher; the latter is a writer and has hosted a radio talk show on pet care.
