Chiefs face Hitmen tonight
The Spokane Chiefs host the 11th-ranked Calgary Hitmen today in the Arena at 7 p.m.
The Chiefs, on a two-game skid after losses to Kamloops and Tri-City last week, are in second place behind the Americans in the U.S. Division of the Western Conference. The Chiefs will also be at home Saturday against Kootenay.
•Eighteen-year-old Stefan Ulmer will play for Team Austria at the 2009 Division I Group B IIHF World Under 20 Championships in Denmark beginning Dec. 15.
Ulmer, Spokane’s lone selection in the 2007 CHL Import Draft, is in his second season in a Spokane jersey and leads all Chiefs defensemen with three goals and 19 points in 29 games.
Ulmer will miss three games before the WHL holiday break.
Soccer
Sounders open on national TV
The Seattle Sounders FC will get a national audience for the first game in franchise history.
The Sounders will open the 2009 Major League Soccer season hosting the New York Red Bulls on March 19, the team announced Tuesday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.
The complete schedule will be announced in February.
Seattle will become the 15th team in the MLS. New York reached the MLS Cup this season, losing to Columbus in the final.
Basketball
Border Clash tickets available
The North Idaho College men’s and women’s teams will take on Community Colleges of Spokane in the third annual Border Clash on Dec. 11.
The doubleheader will begin with the women’s game at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 8 at Gonzaga University’s McCarthey Athletic Center.
A high school boys game between Post Falls and West Valley will begin at 4:30.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at bookstores at SFCC and SCC and include a free Border Clash T-shirt. For groups of more than 20 people, tickets are $2. Contact Scott Kramer for more information at 533-7445.
In Idaho, tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students and can be purchased in advance at any NIC home game or in the NIC athletics office in Post Hall. You can also purchase tickets through TicketsWest at 325-SEAT.
