Huskies dump Oklahoma St.
SEATTLE – Freshman Isaiah Thomas scored 18 points and rugged Jon Brockman pounded Oklahoma State inside with 16 points and 11 rebounds as Washington beat the slumping Cowboys 83-65 on Thursday night.
Brockman got his fourth double-double in seven games this season for the inconsistent Huskies (4-3), who had their most impressive showing of the young season in their only remaining test before the Pac-10 season begins next month.
Washington had an embarrassing loss at Portland in its opener, then got blown out by Kansas and lost to Florida last week.
Obi Muonelo scored 18 points for Oklahoma State (5-3), which lost for the third time in four games. The Cowboys lost to Gonzaga and Michigan State last week.
Washington’s 14-point halftime lead grew to 55-33 just 6 minutes into the second half on a jumper by freshman guard Elston Turner.
Oklahoma State missed five of its first seven shots after the break and never got closer than 14 points after that.
The Cowboys led 11-9 early. Washington coach Lorenzo Romar screamed at his players, “Get it inside!” on offense while throwing his arms toward the lane. The Huskies obeyed and went on a 19-6 run to take a double-digit lead.
Justin Dentmon had the most electric play of the decisive half, off a steal by Turner. Dentmon made a hanging circus shot that he completed by crashing into a defender and then the floor. That put Washington up 39-26 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the half.
The Huskies dominated the game inside by outrebounding the Cowboys 24-14 in the half. Brockman had six of those rebounds.
