Freshmen deliver for Bears
Estey scores 15, Gallaway 12 in win
A free throw and long-range shooting exhibition ultimately went Central Valley’s way Friday night in Greater Spokane League girls basketball.
The host Bears (1-1) outscored Gonzaga Prep (1-1) 22-9 in the third quarter and won 70-56.
There were a combined 58 fouls whistled – 20 on the Bullpups in the first half – and together the teams converted 56 of 78 free throws (72 percent). CV was 30 of 41, Gonzaga 26 of 37.
But the Bears also made six 3-pointers, three by Katie Estey, to Gonzaga’s two, and their 12-point advantage from beyond the arc was nearly the margin of victory.
Estey, a freshman, scored 15 points and fellow freshman Brooke Gallaway added 12. Gallaway was 8 of 10 from the free-throw line and senior Ashley Hinseth was 8 of 12.
CV led by 10 points after a quarter and built a 56-34 advantage through three quarters. The Bullpups made a belated run in the final period.
G-Prep sophomore Tia Pressley was the catalyst. She scored 26 points, including 12 of 13 from the line.
Lewis and Clark 50, University 39: The Tigers (2-0) found themselves in a game at home against the Titans (0-2). It took an 18-10 fourth-quarter to get past a team that lost its opener at G-Prep on Tuesday.
LC led by just three points through three quarters. In the fourth, Daisy Burke and Sarah Kliewer each scored five points to fuel the escape. Burke finished with 15 points and Kliewer 13 to go with 11 rebounds. Zoe Scott scored 11 for the Titans.
Mead 59, Ferris 36: The host Panthers (2-0) forced 23 turnovers and stormed to a 33-9 halftime lead en route to the easy victory over Ferris (0-2).
Tifa Puletasi had 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Three Panthers finished in double figures, with Heidi Lague and Jazmine Redmon adding 10 apiece. Redmon had five assists and five rebounds and Alisa Beard had eight assists.
Hailey Dahlstrom paced all scorers with 15 points for Ferris.
Shadle Park 59, Mt. Spokane 36: Freshman Aleisha Hathaway scored 12 points and sophomore Kendra Knutson added 11 as the visiting Highlanders (2-0) rolled past the Wildcats (0-1).
Ten players scored for Shadle, which led 29-11 by intermission. Katie Karisch scored 11 for Mt. Spokane, a team that has five sophomores and a freshman on its roster.
East Valley 51, Rogers 22: Offensive rebounding led to a 35-10 scoring advantage in the middle two quarters and lifted the Knights (2-0) over the host Pirates (0-2).
EV had 17 offensive rebounds. Jenni White scored 13 points and Morgan Manchester had 11 to lead the offense. Samantha Roybal led Rogers with 10.
