UW waltzes past Texas Southern

Bryan-Amaning’s career night leads way

Associated Press

SEATTLE – Matthew Bryan-Amaning came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points as Washington coasted to an 88-52 victory over winless Texas Southern in non-conference men’s basketball play on Saturday night.

Jon Brockman added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (5-3), making 7 of 8 shot attempts. Quincy Pondexter added 13 as 10 Huskies scored.

Matthew Miller led the Tigers (0-8) with 12 points.

Five minutes into the second half, it turned into the Bryan-Amaning show. The 6-foot-9 freshman forward scored every point – 14 straight – for the Huskies over a 6-minute span, building Washington’s lead to 68-40 with 8:10 left.

Washington had a season-high nine steals and forced 24 turnovers that yielded 46 points. Five of the Huskies’ seven first-half steals came during a 16-2 run from 13:15 to 7:22 to build their lead to 31-15.

The Tigers also hurt themselves at the foul line, making just 4 of 16 attempts.

Brockman had a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) by halftime and the Huskies led 42-28 at the break.

The Huskies finished with 59.3 percent shooting from the floor (35 of 59) and held a 36-27 edge on the boards.

The 36-point edge was easily the widest victory margin for the Huskies, who have won three straight.

The Huskies have five non-conference games remaining (all at home) before opening Pac-10 play at Washington State on Jan. 3, 2009. The first of those five games is Dec. 14 against Portland State at 5 p.m.
