Garfield-Palouse’s big second half beats Tekoa-Oakesdale

Garfield-Palouse used stifling defensive pressure and a big second half by Tianna Woltering on Friday night to breeze past visiting Tekoa-Oakesdale 48-30 in the District 9 North League opener for both schools.

Woltering scored all 16 of her points after intermission and also added five rebounds, three steals and two assists as the Vikings raised their overall record to 4-1. Tekoa-Oakesdale (0-2) was paced offensively by Shelby Puckett, who finished with 15 points.

St. John-Endicott 66, Pomeroy 54: Kelly VanLith scored 25 points as the Eagles (5-0) downed the Pirates in a league opener.

Intermountain League

St. Maries 58, Orofino 20: Orofino had no answer for the shooting of Karly Truscott, who poured in a game-high 20 points in fueling visiting St. Maries’ rout of the Maniacs (0-5) in the conference opener for both schools. Doris Sines added eight points and 10 rebounds for St. Maries (4-4).

Bonners Ferry 38, Kellogg 21: Visiting Bonners Ferry (5-2, 1-1) got a game-high 10 points from Erin Hiatt and held Kellogg (1-4, 0-1) scoreless in the first period.

Panorama League

Curlew 56, Northport 38: Curlew (3-1) used a full-court trap to limit visiting Northport (0-3) to just 12 first-half points and rolled to an easy win in the league opener for both teams. Larissa Miller paced Curlew’s balanced scoring attack with 12 points, while Northport’s Shyanne Wilson led all scorers with 13.

Non-league

Freeman 55, Colville 45: Carley Heinen scored 18 points and teammate Megan McIntyre added 10 as visiting Freeman (5-0) used a big first half to knock off Colville (1-1), which got 15 points from Tanna Morris.

Pullman 60, Moscow 51: Shelby Cheslek erupted for 25 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked four shots in leading the visiting Greyhounds (2-0) past the Bears (2-6). Timena Shebala finished with 14 points for Moscow.

Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 51, Riverside 24: Visiting Lakeside (4-0) got 13 points from Leslie Stillar and limited Riverside to just three first-half points. Peyton McMahon had nine points for the Rams (0-3), who also got 10 rebounds from Joni Nagy.

Columbia (Hunters) 53, Republic 28: Krista Colvin scored 13 points and three eighth graders called up for the game all scored as the Lions (2-0) skated past the Tigers (1-3), who got 12 points from Chandra Bacon.

Newport 41, Deer Park 40: Newport’s Miranda Frederick hit the game-winning free throw and Deer Park missed a layin at the buzzer as the visiting Grizzlies (3-2) squeezed past the Stags (0-3). Frederick was one of three Newport players to finish with eight points. Deer Park’s Jessica Talbot and Melissa Brown shared game scoring honors with 11 points apiece.

Lakeside 54, Superior (Mont.) 44: Saundra Curley and Ruth Brunelle combined for 35 points in leading visiting Lakeside (4-1) to victory at the St. Regis Tournament. Curley finished with a game-high 18 points, followed by Brunelle’s 17.

Mullan 32, St. Regis 31 (Mont.): The Tigers took a one-point victory to advance to the St. Regis Tournament title game against fellow North Star team Lakeside (Plummer). Britany Walsh had 13 points and 18 rebounds for Mullan and teammate Sydni Kotschevar didn’t score but pulled down 16 rebounds.

Lake City JV 47, Kootenai 19: Lake City’s junior varsity got a game-high 16 points from Katy Rowe and limited winless Kootenai (0-5) to just seven first-half points in picking up its road win over the Warriors.

Odessa 37, Moses Lake Christian 33: Odessa’s defensive pressure proved to be the key as the Tigers (1-3) overcame Esther Timofeyen’s 29-point scoring outburst to pick up its first win of the season. Micah and Mariah Davison each scored eight points for Odessa.

Cusick 46, Selkirk 29: Visiting Cusick (3-0) used Holly Edward’s game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds to bounce past the Rangers (2-3).

Sprague-Harrington 41, Wilson Creek 32: Sophomore Lacey Hirst pumped in 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds, and senior teammate Katlyn Lowman added 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Falcons outlasted visiting Wilson Creek.
