Nelson’s basket lifts North Central over Ferris

Darwin Nelson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with 1 second remaining to cap a fourth-quarter rally and help the visiting North Central Indians pull out a 62-61 victory over the Ferris Saxons in Greater Spokane League boys basketball play on Saturday night.

Nathan Pelton tallied 24 points for the Indians, who trailed 44-37 after three quarters. Lucas Evans chipped in with 11 points.

Taylor Kamitomo topped Ferris with 14 points, while Riley Stockton and Jason Bates each scored 12. Connor Halliday, who hit a pair of free throws to put the Saxons up 61-60 in the final seconds, scored 10.

The Saxons couldn’t capitalize on a huge advantage at the free-throw line. Ferris (3-2, 3-2) hit 18 of 25 tries, while North Central (4-1, 4-1) was 4 of 10.

The win gives the Indians sole possession of third place in league play. Ferris drops into a tie for fourth.

Gonzaga Prep 61, Rogers 50: Ryan Nicholas tallied 18 points and Sean Fischer scored 10 to help the unbeaten Bullpups (5-0, 5-0) fend off the host Pirates (2-4, 2-4).

Dillon Franklin and Jesse Vaughn paced Rogers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Rogers was in control midway through the second quarter, leading 22-13, before the Bullpups went on a 15-0 run to close out the half. G-Prep turned its 28-22 halftime advantage into a 45-35 lead after three quarters.

The first-place Bullpups connected on 19 of 26 free-throw attempts, while Rogers didn’t miss in 12 trips to the line.

Shadle Park 54, Lewis and Clark 51: Anthony Brown sank four 3-pointers on his way to 21 points and the visiting Highlanders (5-1, 5-1) held off the Tigers (2-3, 2-3).

Robby Douglas added 13 points for Shadle Park, which jumped out to a 12-2 lead and then withstood a pair of fourth-quarter rallies by LC.

Levi Taylor had a game-high 25 points for the Tigers.

Mt. Spokane 58, Central Valley 51: Conner Haley had a double-double – 19 points, 11 rebounds – to spark the Wildcats (3-2, 3-2) to a win over the host Bears (1-4, 1-4).

Chaz Johnson added 13 points and three steals for the winners. Alex Howard scored 16 and Michael Williams added 14 points for the Bears.

Mt. Spokane outrebounded CV 30-22 and forced the Bears into 14 turnovers while committing only six.

Girls

Ferris 57, North Central 49: Ashley Lockmer scored 13 points and Alex Quann hit all five of her free-throw attempts and scored nine to help the Saxons (2-4, 2-4) fend off the visiting Indians (0-5, 0-5).

Hailey Markham-Patti tossed in 15 points for NC.

Ferris gained control of the game in the second and third quarters when it outscored the Indians 32-16. NC led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Lewis and Clark 66, Shadle Park 45: Sarah Kliewer led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points and the Tigers (5-0, 5-0) defeated the visiting Highlanders (4-2, 4-2) for their 38th consecutive win.

Jeneva Anderson (12), Daisy Burke (11) and Nakia Arquette (10) also reached double figures for the Tigers, who pulled even with idle Mead atop the GSL standings. Anderson added seven rebounds and eight assists.

Shadle was led by the 17 points of Aleisha Hathaway.

Central Valley 88, Mt. Spokane 41: Freshman Brooke Gallaway scored a game-high 22 points and the Bears (4-1, 4-1) romped to a victory over the visiting Wildcats (1-4, 1-4).

Brandy Johnson had 15 points and Loree Hill scored 11 for the Bears.

Central Valley shot 56 percent (31 of 55) from the floor for the game.

Katie Karisch topped the Wildcats with 12 points. Mt. Spokane shot just 27 percent (15 of 55) from the floor.

CV raced to a 24-7 lead after one quarter and upped it to a 49-17 advantage at the half.

Gonzaga Prep 71, Rogers 27: Tia Presley buried three 3-pointers on her way to a 30-point night and Sarah Manix added 12 points as the visiting Bullpups (3-2, 3-2) rolled to a victory over the Pirates (0-6, 0-6).

Samantha Roybal paced the Pirates with 12 points. Teammate Jessica Carpenter pulled down 13 rebounds.

G-Prep led 13-2 at the end of the first quarter and increased its lead to 39-16 at halftime.
